Air ioniser

Ionic air purifiers
Air Ionizers are used in air purification. Airborne particles are attracted to the electrode in an effect similar to static electricity. These ions are deionized by searching grounded conductors, such as walls and ceilings. To increase the efficiency of this process, some commercial products, presents these surfaces in the device. The incidence of nosocomial infections in British hospitals were the National Health Service (NHS) for research on the effectiveness of anions for air purification. Recent SARS outbreak have fueled the desire for personal Ionizers in the Far East including Japan (where many products are specialized to include negative ion generators, including toothbrushes, refrigerators, air conditioners, air cleaners and washing machines). There are no specific standards for these devices. ASUS Notebook manufacturers are now started to include air Ionizers in their computers.
Ions versus ozone
Ionisers should not be confused with ozone generators, even though both devices operate in the same way. Ionisers use electrostatically charged plates to produce positively or negatively charged gas ions that particulate matter sticks to (in an effect similar to static electricity). Ozone generators are optimized to attract an extra oxygen ion to an O2 molecule with either a corona discharge tube or UV light. Even the best Ionisers will produce a small amount of ozone, and Ozone generators will produce gas ions of molecules other than ozone (unless fed pure oxygen, not air). [Citation needed]
At high concentrations, ozone can also be toxic air-borne bacteria, and can destroy or kill these sometimes infectious organisms. But the necessary levels toxic enough to humans and animals by FDA explicit requirement ozone therapy not be used as medical treatment, and has taken action against companies that do not comply with this rule. Pure ozone is a highly toxic and highly reactive gas. A higher daily average of over 0.1 ppm (0.2 mg / m) is not recommended and can damage lungs and olfactory bulb cells directly.
Consumer Reports lawsuit
Consumer Reports, a non-profit US-based product-testing magazine, reported in October 2003 that air Ionizers do not carry high enough standard compared to conventional HEPA air filters. The exception was a combination device, used a fan to move air while ionizing it. In response to that report, the sharper image, a manufacturer of air Ionizers (Among others) sued Consumer's Union (publishers of Consumer Reports) for product defamation. Consumer Reports gave the Ionic Breeze and other popular devices "fail" because they have a low Clean Air Delivery Rate (Cadre). Cadre measures the amount of filtered air circulates in a short period and was originally designed for to rate media based air cleaners. The Sharper Image claimed that this test was a poor way to assess the Ionic Breeze, since it ignores other functions, such 24-hour continuous cleaning, easy maintenance and quiet operation. U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California subsequently struck down the sharper image's appeal and rejected case, reasoning that the sharper image had failed to demonstrate that it could be one of the statements made by Consumer Reports were false. Court's final decision in May 2005 ordered the Sharper Image to pay $ 525,000 USD for Consumer Union's litigation costs.
Negative Ion Treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder
Published research show that high levels of negative ions is a useful treatment for Seasonal affective disorder, where the negative ions in sufficient density (volume). Note that this is a separate issue from air purification claims or ozone generation is happening in some devices that also generate negative ions.
One of the pioneers in this area is Michael Terman, Ph.D., director of the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms at Columbia University Medical Center and director of the Clinical Chronobiology Program at New York State Psychiatric Institute. As described in Psychiatry Online, Terman and several colleagues obtained preliminary evidence that a simulated dawn could reduce the symptoms of winter depression. As a side effect of their research, they learned that high-density negative air ionization can have the same effect. Clinical research has been published by Columbia University, American Journal of Psychiatry / APA, 2006, Archives of General Psychiatry, Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute, 1998 and Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine, Columbia University 1995th
