Why Settle For A Decent Digital Radiography System?

Digital radiography (DR) is an X-ray imaging system that uses digital sensors instead of conventional photographic films. These components are far more effective, less time consuming (through bypass chemical processing) and are equipped with the ability to digitally enhance and transfer images. Further, less radiation is utilized for producing images of similar contrast as in traditional radiography.

How Does Digital Radiography System Work?
The DR makes use of digital image capture system, while the usual radiography systems are enabled with X-ray films. Due to this, DR can preview the images immediately and these are even available for analysis. This leads to a dynamic range and eliminates the cost of films along with associated processing. Moreover, they have the ability to incorporate special image processing settings that improves the overall quality of the images.

Direct FPDs: Made from amorphous selenium, these are direct detectors as the X-ray photons that fall on these sensors get converted into charge directly. The exterior panel of direct FPDs is designed to sustain high voltage and is equipped with bias electrode. The photons form holes on the electrode and the transmission of these electrodes is based on the potential charge of voltage.

Indirect FPDs: Crafted from amorphous silicon, this is a popular sensor found in digital radiography systems. This combines the power of scintillator (at the outer layer) with caesium iodine and this converts the rays into light. Due to this conversion, the indirect FPDs are denoted as in-direct imaging device.

Does Implementation of Digital Radiology Matter?
Medical imaging needs both well-maintained equipment and trained professionals. A major advantage of DR is that it is relatively easy to handle, store, distribute and retrieve the images anytime and at any location that has been networked. This means that a physician, the radiologist and the patient all from different locations can communicate effectively with the use of stored images. The informatics of imaging involves computerization and extending the relevant information of patient demographics along with data reports and image diagnosis for review. The digital images that are captured in DR are managed using dedicated image network (DIM) and picture archive and communication systems, also known as PACS, and these information are recorded in the Radiology Information Systems.
