HR encompasses a wide array of tasks and functions. It is no longer just a division devoted to payroll and expenses, but now includes beneficial sub-sections such as performance management, recruitment, and development and learning. HR has the potential to be a huge factor in regard to the success of your business, so making sure that it grows well, and grows correctly, is essential. 

Here are three vital steps to ensure that your HR department is being as helpful as it can be. 

  • Hire the Right Roles

There are many roles within an HR department that needs to be filled. Every department will have their own configuration and alternations to this; however, there are definitely some positions that can’t be ignored. As it continues to grow, your business should aim to have at the very least a Director of Human Resources, a Human Resources Manager, a Staffing Coordinator, a Development Officer, and a Human Resources Generalist. 

The Director of HR can be considered the leader and the supervisor of all HR employees. Their main responsibility is to craft the company’s HR functions and communicate these plans to upper management such as the HR manager. The HR manager is a direct report to the director and focuses more on the operational side of HR. Maintaining a seamless operation is the main goal of an HR manager. 

Beneath these roles is the Staffing Coordinator, who focuses on the personal side of HR such as recruitment and retention, as well as managing vacation requests, overtime, and occasionally, payroll. The Development Officer is responsible for training new recruits and current employees and assessing how well the training is going. 

There is also an entry-level role such as the Human Resources Generalist, who takes care of all the administrative tasks to do within HR, and is a role best suited for bigger HR departments. 

  • Invest in the Right Technology

There is plenty of software out there that can be used by an HR department to make their tasks a lot easier and their processes more efficient. Getting specialized software can help HR perform vital functions with minimal effort, meaning that time and resources can be spent on more pressing issues and objectives. There’s software that focuses on financial management which can aid in the payroll side of HR, while there is also software that can help with scheduling, to make working out overtime and holiday requests less of as headache. 


Of course, there are also other forms of HR Software that can complete a wide array of functions and serve as a centralized hub for all aspects of HR.   • Maintain a Good Ratio 

When building or maintaining an HR department, you don’t want to have a small team that’s swamped by thousands of potential employees and issues. This means that as a general rule, you want 1 member of HR staff for 100 employees, as this can keep your HR department efficient, while maintaining a personal relationship with the staff.
