Leukonychia Striata: What is it?
It’s a condition where the whole nail plate turns white in color. The condition is more common in fingernails than on toenails and another type of leukonychia is Partial leukonychia.
Although it is not a painful disease, as we all knows that bones are the mineral storehouse of the body so the fingernails are known as window to our bone health and when your nails showing white spots, it shows that the health of your bones is not well, and they can be shown easily to anybody if you are deficient in minerals such as calcium, zinc, magnesium.
Treatment of Leukonychia
It is not a life-threatening illness but you have to take it seriously as the deficiency of minerals and weak bones can lead you to various problems related to health. Remedies For Leukonychia In Ayurveda
To improve your (Agni) you need to improve your digestive strength so that you can easily utilize the minerals and vitamins in food and can easily breakdown the food. Good digestion is very helpful in preventing many problems related to the stomach, like gas and bloating acidify the blood so to maintain constant pH, the body gets the minerals from bones to compensate for the additional acid level.
The Household Herbs
The simple herbs which can be found in any household you can get help with these herbs to cure leukonychia.
1. White Vinegar:
De-staining properties present in white vinegar and its anti-fungal properties helps to get rid of leukonychia.
How to use it?
Take ½ cup of white vinegar and ¼ cup of warm water, mix them very well, now transfer them to a big bowl so that you can easily soak your hands into it, just do it for 15 to 20 minutes but be aware that water should not be hotter than your power to resist its heat. Just twice a day, thrice a week can do wonders for you. As white vinegar has detaining and anti-fungal properties it will help you get rid of leukonychia.
2. Garlic:
Garlic has wonderful anti-inflammatory properties and its anti-fungal agents, help to treat leukonychia.
How to use it?
Take minced garlic, to mince it just crush it very well and apply it on your nails and cover them with a piece of sterilized cloth, remain it for 12 to 18 minutes and wash them with lukewarm water, just do this method for 15 days.
3. Baking Soda:
Baking soda has to disinfect properties that can help treat the infection, responsible for causing the white spots.
How to use it?
- ½ cup baking soda
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ warm water
Take half a cup of baking soda, one-fourth cup of apple cider vinegar, one-fourth cup of warm water, mix them well, now transfer it into a big bowl so that you can soak your nails into it.
4. Yogurt:
Yogurt has microbes in it which help to fight fungal effects of the leukonychia.
How to use it?
Take 1 small bowl of plain yogurt and simply just put your both hands into the bowl for 20 minutes, after that just rinse your both hands with water. You can use this remedy once a day for 15 days without break. The microbes present in yogurt have antifungal properties they help you in getting away leukonychia.
5. Lavender Oil:
Lavender oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, help to fasten up the healing process of leukonychia.
How to use it?
Take 6 drops of lavender oil and 15ml olive oil, mix them well and apply this mixture to your fingernails and massage them, remain it for 20 minutes, rinse them with simple water. Do it twice daily for at least 25 days or if you get cured early then stop it.
6. Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil contains vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, and medium-chain fatty acids,
The fat content in coconut oil helps to retain the original natural moisture of the skin.
How to use it?
Just at bedtime take a few drops of coconut oil and massage it well on hands, Let it remain overnight. Do this daily for 20 days. Coconut has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory properties, which help to reduce the leukonychia.
7. Orange Oil:
As orange oil contains anti-fungal properties, it helps to fade away the white marks on the nail.
How to use it?
Take 6ml of orange oil and 15ml of olive oil, mix them both very well and apply them on your nails, keep it for 20minutes, after that rinse it with water. For seven days daily you have to do this and you will see the good results as orange oil helps to treat fungus as it has anti-fungal properties in it.
8. Tea Tree Oil:
“Trichophyton rubrum” is the fungus causing nail infection and tea tree oil is very effective in reducing this fungus which is one of the causes for nail infections.
How to use it?
Mix 6 drops of tea tree oil and 15 drops of coconut oil, and mix them well and apply them on your fingernails, rinse them after 20 minutes with water. Do it twice a day for the whole week without break, as tea tree oil has anti-microbial properties it helps to reduce leukonychia.
9. Lemon Juice:
Lemon juice is a wonderful remedy for curing nail spots as it contains vitamin-C and hence it is beneficial for nail infections.
How to use it?
Take 1 to 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, 25 to 30 drops of olive oil, mix them well and apply on to the fingernails as lemon juice is rich in vitamin-c, which helps to give you healthy nails.
10. Vitamins and Minerals:
Deficiency of vitamin c, calcium and zinc can lead to white spots on fingernails, hence it’s necessary for us to get proper nutrients from our diet. We should include plenty of citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, oysters, nuts; chicken, milk, yogurt, and other nutrients in our daily diet and make it a habit to avoid junk food and to have a healthy diet consisting of above varieties of food and fruits with leafy vegetables.
